When the lake turns and the visibility drops, do you find more success by staying away from #22-26, or do you use the same small size in brighter patterns? Thoughts?

Man I can't believe no one gave you the courtesy of a reply. I go a size bigger and maybe something with a little flash, but you'd be amazed that the fish can still find your small offerings in that turbid water. Streamers can also be effective at that time.

I've only fished maybe a baker's dozen worth of days in low visibility water on the San Juan, so I'm sure there are people who post on this board with 10 and 20 times as much experience as I have, if not more.

That said, I like to fish 20s when the water is cloudy. I also really like to fish the bigger flies, like chamois and buckskin worms, and bunny leeches. I've heard people also say to fish bright patterns in clear water and dark patterns in muddy water, but I'm not sure how true this is in general or on the San Juan.

Thanks for the replies - We usually take a late winter and early spring trip, so half the time I can't see where I'm fishing. I guess it's the price to pay to avoid summer crowds.

I've fished the river a few times after the lake turned and visibility dropped. If nymphing, I found that foam wing emergers worked well (size 22); but we stumbled into bunny leaches (white and yellow) one week and the fishing was off the hook. Fished up by the Cable Hole and upper flats and tossed out some leeches with a little lead on them and stripped them back fast and we murdered them (4X leader and tippet). When a midge hatch came off (mid to late AM), we all switched to a griffiths gnat and for a good 30-45 minutes we got them on the surface and then switched back to the bunny leach (and kept the same 4X, just clipped the leach off and attached the gnat)..

If you plan on seeking credit, a cash rebate credit card could be one benefit you need to check on. The positive facets of receiving money back through expenditures made by using a bankcard really are enjoyed by a lot of people.
