Fishing on the river is INERADICABLE! Tuesday and Thursday the river was loaded with a midge hatch! Caught a few on a #22 desert storm and foamback #22, in the area of the T hole.
Wednesday went down to the new Hammond Tract. Nice place, fishing was so so. Had to go down a bit to 16 - 18 size bugs. Caught a few small rainbow's, nice water.
Thursday got into a 5 hour hatch in the braids in one hole. I didn't believe it myself. Fish were from 14" - 22".
Most caught a #20 or #22 BWO. Important you had to high stick, keep the fly high and dry and a B+ drift. One of the best days I've had in 25 years on the river. Lasted from 10 AM - 3 PM.
Then went back to my car and got out a new Tenkara rod a guide friend sent me. Had spent two hours reading up on how to fish it.
A real trip. They say takes 2 minutes to learn to cast. Try over an hour.
But what an experience. Like the old days of High Sticking without an indicator! Real shock when you hook your first fish and you have no reel or line to help you with a #20 desert storm. Really a lot of fun!
Was talking to one of the shop owners about how good the river has produced this year. My thinking on my way home to ABQ it might be because there was no 5,000 cfs for weeks like in the past. Bugs had a better chance of survival.
Just food for thought!
Wish everyone a day like i had on Thursday.
Thanks, Sundance |

Desert Storm is generally fl. fire orange on the San Juan. Looked at instructions for it on youtube and it can be many colors, but this is the predominant one I have seen. |
