FYI to those planning to stay at Cottonwood campground....think twice before staying there. After spending many years making regular trips to this campground it has certainly changed. Granted the state spent a ton of money this past year installing water at each site so no more shared water source to fill your tanks which is nice. However, this past week we found they turn the water off every single night for whatever reason. Really sucks if you're in the middle of showering or doing dishes.

They no longer have a regular camp host and the sites are just awful. Nothing but dead grass and over run with weeds. Certainly not the well-maintained grass and trimming of years before. At the camp host site, the state has moved in a couple of 5th wheels that you see multiple employee trucks parked at during the day, but no site of any employees doing anything.

The biggest concern we had was the total disregard for public safety because of being blocked coming in or out of the park. There is a dip in the road running through a large ditch that is filled three feet high on both sides with run off sediment. They make a half-assed effort to clear the road when it fills with sand but make no effort to fix it. As we were hit with rain last night that lasted for hours, the concern for any emergency in the campground was real. You are cut off from the world. No way any EMS, ranger, or police would be able to get past this block in the road. This has gone on for years....and is one of the many dirty little secrets of the lack of planning and appropriating funds where they should be, by the administration of Navajo State Park.

Hi Terri. That does sound bad and if you like, you could call the park superintendent at 505-632-2278 to express your concern. I trust that others will have also observed the situation and feel similarly.

Sometimes you just have to give a call and hopefully, good things will happen. If not, you can always contact the New Mexico State Parks division at the state level by trying:

Christina Cordova at 505-476-3363 or e-mail christina.cordova@state.nm.us

She is the public relations coordinator and I would think this is a situation she'd want to know about....just a thought.
