I am hearing that 8x tippet is recommended for the San Juan. Is this true? I can barely manage 7x and usually just give up and go with 6x. This alone could cause me to decide to not make this trip.

Thanks in advance! Rob

I usually use 5X seldom use 6X mono tippet. Ocassionaly use some flouro in the same x's. I think correct presentation at appropriate depth are more important than tippet size even in clear water.

Most people use 6x fluorocarbon and go to 7x on hard days. Fluorocarbon is expensive. The store 'guides' up there all say to spend your money on the last 18" of your line.

I do have 6x and 7x fluorocarbon. Rigging is not my strong point so the guide that I have for Friday should be a major assistance. Any words of wisdom on rigging droppers, splitshot, line lengths, etc would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the responses! My fiancee and I will arrive there Thursday evening!

5 or 6x tippet are usually fine for anything on the san juan, unless you are fishing for big fish in crystal clear water (backwater sloughs), then you need to go with 13-15 foot leaders are 6 or 7x fluorocarbon.

On this web site's home page, in the left hand side bar below Mike Mora's picture click on tips and techniques.

Good luck and have fun.
