What is the advantage of buying a shorter or longer fishing rod? I am looking into buying a new fishing rod and the two options are either a 5'10" rod or a longer 6'6" rod, i usually just fish the detroit river and i do many different styles from casting to trolling to jigging and pretty much anything that's working. but i would like to know what the advantages of getting the shorter rod would be and what the advantages of getting the longer rod would be, also please let me know any disadvantages either might have, they are the same brand same price same everything except for the length, both are even medium action. Thank you for helping me with this.

If you are speaking of a spinning or baitcasting rod, I am no help as I am a fly caster. There may be others on this site who also bass fish or go for warm water species who can comment on this.

If you are speaking of a fly rod that you would fish on a river (assuming it is 60 ft or more across) then I would say both are too short. I am not aware of 5 ft fly rods but have a couple in the 61/2 to 7 foot range that I use on small streams.

Hope this helps.

The river should fish good all the way until high water. As of now high water is scheduled to begin 05/23. The B.O.R. will begin the 05/23 and ramp up the flow s around 1000 cfs a day up to 5000csf, at the end of the week. This flow will last until the end of the first week end in June. They will drop the flow from 5000 to 500cfs 06/6-10. The first week after high water can be some of the best fishing the river has to offer.
