You know that feeling you get after playing a REALLY good round of golf?

Breakfast at Fisheads, get some good advise on flies from Peggy and on
the river about 8:30.
It's Super Bowl Saturday and you know it's going to be crowded.
But the weather promises to be good and it didn't disappoint.
The upper flats and cable hole already have 10 guys whipping the
water...so where to fish?
There is no one is on the far bank so I waded straight over but it was odd
that I only spooked 1 fish. I don't see any activity on the surface, but
it's early. So let's dredge and see what happens.
Line up with a sink tip and a streamer and flogged it for 2 hours with
minimal success. The 4 other guys nymphing the same run from the south
bank are have just as much luck as I am, not much.
Where are the fish?
10:00 and the midges are starting to come off still no surface action.
Switch lines and tied on a black wooly and a 20 red zebra midge. This was
better but still....where are the fish?
Nymphed back down the run, crossed over and fished up the other side.
I did see and catch a few more fish. The regular that gulps midge clusters right by the bank of goose bucket island was there but no other surface activity.
It's noon and where were all his buddies?
When I was on the far bank there were 2 guys having some luck just above the islands.
By the time I had gotten there they had moved and the riffle was open.
The current flies of hope and prayer were a pale yellow egg above a 24 black zebra midge.
For the next 2 hours or so it was Christmas in that little riffle. The water had just
enough color in it that you couldn't see the fish in shallow water and there were fish in every direction. It seemed anywhere I threw it a fish took it and with some very aggressive takes.
Lots of fish, my arm got tired and it was back to the truck sunburned and happy about 3:30.
But here's the reason I'll be back. Early in the venture in to "Christmas Riffle" I did hook a fish. You know one of THOSE fish.
It was in a short little slide not 2 feet deep and only 15 feet from me. The indicator stopped, set, snag/rock? but it didn't feel like that. It felt solid and different and I had felt this before.
I kept the pressure on and put more and more on to see
what might happen. I could NOT lift it AT ALL.
It was, or seemed like, forever (3 sec) and it started to move. SOB! That big ass, slab sided rainbow took 15 seconds to hang my fly in his jaw.

Damn, you gotta love this place.

oh! and about the golf, it's the same feeling, and great memories.
