Chris
Taylor, owner of Fisheads
Guide Service, has recently
purchased Rizuto’s San Juan River Lodge in the center of the
town of Navajo Dam. Those of you who have fished with Fisheads Guide
Service know the quality and the eagerness to please that has made
Fisheads the premier guide service on the San Juan river. That same
quality and service is now available in lodging on the river.
LODGE
Fisheads San Juan River Lodge has eight rooms that will accommodate up
to eighteen people. Each room has been remodeled, and all of them have
32” flat screenTV’s with Direct TV satellite
access, microwave ovens, refrigerators and WiFi access. All of the
bedding is new as are the pillows. Pride is evident everywhere in the
cleanliness and upkeep of each room.
Coming
on line soon will be an accommodation called
“Chuck’s Place” which is a four bedroom
house. The house has a master suite with its own bath, two bedrooms
with queen size beds and one bedroom with a double bed. There is also
another full bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer and a
living room with a futon and a 42” flat screen TV. As with
all of the accommodations, Chuck’s Place is fully air
conditioned. This will be perfect for families, and small groups that
want to stay together.
FLY
SHOP
Also at the Fisheads San Juan River Lodge is an endorsed fully equipped
ORVIS fly shop. In the fly shop, we offer the full line of ORVIS
equipment and accessories. With a minimum $50.00 order, anything you
order from us will be shipped to you for free. The fly selection we
offer at the shop is second to none on the San Juan. They are custom
tied flies specifically for the San Juan and its unique hatches. You
can also get up to date information on the river and its hatches so you
know what bugs are hatching and what flies are working as soon as you
get here. No wasting time trying to figure out what’s going
on your first day. Start right off with the correct flies and catching
those famous San Juan River trout. You will find our staff very
knowledgeable and eager to help and share their experience and
knowledge of the river.
RESTAURANT
By the end of July, we will have our restaurant, “The
Backcast Cafe” open
for your dining pleasure. The restaurant will bring great food prepared
by Chef Josh Mesker, a graduate of Johnson Wales Culinary School, to
the town of Navajo Dam. Josh will be offering fine dining as well as
lighter fare to satiate your appetite after a great day of fishing on
the river. Until the restaurant opens, we are within easy walking
distance of the two restaurants in the town of Navajo Dam.

Soaring Eagle Lodge
is tucked behind a mesa on the southern bank of the world-famous San
Juan River, three miles downriver of the village of Navajo Dam, New
Mexico. Soaring Eagle Lodge is the premier riverside fly fishing lodge
accommodating to the refined fly-fishing experience on the San Juan
River. Our booking packages include your fully appointed and charming
cabin, Chef prepared lodge meals – the popular breakfast buffet and of
course the famous evening three-course dinners. Along with the best
guides around providing expert advice on fishing to wild big browns and
the infamous rainbows of the San Juan, a riverbank lunch, and even
instructional tips when requested. Plus our top quality fly shop is
just a double haul away from the secluded and scenic Crow’s Foot
fishing hole of the San Juan!
What to expect fly fishing the San Juan River Most
fishing occurs in the Quality Waters of the San Juan, these waters
begin just below Navajo Lake’s spillway and flow nearly 4 river miles.
A section of ‘bait waters’ continues downriver along the Cottonwood
Campgrounds and the Village, thereafter the San Juan becomes private
waters. Soaring Eagle Lodge is located downriver along these private
waters, allowing us to float, anchor and wade two river miles of the
San Juan. In the Quality Waters, it is generally preferred to float in
a drift boat. The San Juan’s legendary trout take tiny flies on light
tippet, quickly putting your rod control on notice. Floating allows a
guide to dance the boat and you with that mythical fish allowing the
fight to play in your favor, whereas the same hookup from the static
wading position, gives the trout the advantage in challenging that
light tippet. Wading the San Juan provides for an opportunity to learn
the finesse of fly-fishing to large trout eating small insects and
choosing the best size, shape and color of each fly to “match the
hatch”. Not just a challenge, but a brave contest of wits!
General Information On
a typical day, you wake up after a quiet night’s sleep in your own
secluded standalone cabin. There’s fresh brewed hot coffee available on
the breezeway by 6:30 AM and breakfast is served at 7:00 AM, giving you
time to eat, check out the latest in the fly shop and walk back to your
cabin and grab what you need for the day. By 8:15 AM you’ll meet your
guide, get a take on the day, and hop in the truck with the drift boat
in tow. You and your guide will head up the river to the put-in and
launch the boat, generally at the famous Texas Hole. In moments you are
floating, casting and fishing. Later in the day there will be a lunch
break provided by your guide. Now with some private time to relax and
refuel you’ll quietly reflect upon the sounds of the river, the
sandstone formations, admiring the native flora and fauna, while
discussing that special fish from the morning! After lunch, the float
continues through the day, ending at the take out. The guide will put
you ashore and anchor his boat, grab his truck and be back to trailer
the boat. Then it’s on to the lodge to wind down a bit before dinner.
Your three-course dinner is served promptly at 7:00 PM in the dining
hall. Afterwards, you may enjoy your evening at your cabin, in the
hospitality suite or out on the gazebo at the Crow’s Foot.
